Film events to attend this month, including 'Boyz n the Hood' for $1 and DFW South Asian Film Festival 

The Texas Theatre and Black Cinematheque have joined to produce the "Black Cinematheque Filmmaker Series," which will begin Saturday, Feb. 10.

Each film will only cost $1. The South Dallas Cultural Center will co-present the event, held during Black History Month.

The series kicks off with John Singleton's Boyz N the Hood (1991, R, 112 mins.) at 5:30 p.m. Saturday and concludes Feb. 24 with director Spike Lee's Malcolm X (1992, R, 202 mins.).

Other films include: Spencer Williams' The Blood of Jesus (1941); Gordon Parks Jr.'s Super Fly (1972), complete with an afterparty featuring legendary DJ Spinderella, because, of course; and My Brother's Wedding (1983).

Films will take turns screening at Texas Theatre (231 W. Jefferson Blvd., Dallas) and Black Cinematheque (3400 S. Fitzhugh Ave., Dallas).

The DFW South Asian Film Festival continues through Sunday, Feb. 11, at AMC Village on the Parkway, 5100 Belt Line Road, Dallas. Festival organizers advise buying the fast-selling tickets in advance via the festival website, dfwsaff.com. Films include the Texas premieres of Aarsa and Ask the Sexpert; the Dallas premiere of Abu that includes a Q&A; and the North American premiere of Babylon Sisters. Tickets range from $20-$50.

"Leading Ladies" continues with a screening of Cabaret on Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at the Plano Angleika, in the Shops at Legacy (7205 Bishop Road). The series will screen classic films from the 1930's through the 1970's on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. with reserved seating. Tickets cost $10.50 each.

The Tuesday Night Classics film series returns to Harkins Theatres. Celebrate the 50th anniversary of Romeo and Juliet (1968) on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 7 p.m. at Harkins Southlake, 1450 Plaza Place, Southlake. $5. Feb. 20: The Princess Bride. Feb. 27: Mrs Doubtfire.

Cinewilde Presents The Color Purple (1985) on Feb. 16 at 9 p.m. at Texas Theatre, 231 W. Jefferson Blvd. Dallas. If you missed the award-winning musical that just left the Music Hall at Fair Park, here's your chance to catch the award-baiting movie starring Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah Winfrey on the big screen. $10.
