Alamo Drafthouse-Cedars celebrates black superheroes, including 'Black Panther,' this month

A heroic Black History Month film series and an opening-night Black Panther party are highlights this month at Alamo Drafthouse in the Cedars (1005 S. Lamar St., Dallas).

While it's on track to become the biggest, Black Panther is certainly not the first movie with a black superhero as its main character. So here comes "World of Heroes: A Cinematic Celebration," a reminder for some and a teachable moment for others, marching through the month of February.

YouTube channel Pretty Brown and Nerdy is presenting the series that focuses on movies featuring black superheroes as the protagonists.

While there's no Steel in sight (sorry, Shaq), the series continues with Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai on Tuesday, Feb. 13, at 9:10 p.m.

(Damon Wayans' Blankman, Robert Townsend's The Meteor Man, and Michael Jai White's Spawn previously screened.)

There will be an opening-night party for Black Panther on Thursday, Feb. 15. Bandan Koro: An African Drum and Dance Ensemble will perform before the 7, 7:30 and 8:05 p.m. showings, and there will be cosplayers along with DJ sets from Blue, The Misfit. A themed menu featuring African cuisine inspired by the movie will be available. And there will be pop-up shops and photo opportunities.

Then the celebration, um, series, continues with Blade -- which, sigh, some people don't realize is an actual Marvel character -- on Monday, Feb. 19, at 7:30 p.m. Chronicle will play on Wednesday, Feb. 21, at 7:30 p.m. And celebrate the 10th anniversary of the almost criminally underappreciated and undersold Hancock on Tuesday, Feb. 20, at 9 p.m.
