Denton Black Film Festival packs schedule with more than 40 films for January event

The Denton Black Film Festival is setting up its fourth year as its best with the announcement that almost 50 films will be screened in 2018.

The festival is scheduled for Jan. 25 to Jan. 28. Events will be held at the Campus Theatre at 214 W. Hickory St., and other venues in downtown Denton.

And that's not all. The festival is also doing some groundbreaking, with DBFF Director of Film Linda Eaddy noting in a release that "we've actually dedicated a block to short films produced by women filmmakers for the first time."

The opening-night film is Steps, directed by Jay Rodriguez and Rock Davis. Former professional basketball player Shaquille O'Neal is an executive producer of the drama about how a robbery sends the victim on a downward spiral that he's trying to come back from.

There will also be live music: Singer-songwriter-musician Frank McComb, who has toured with Teena Marie and Philip Bailey, will perform on Jan. 27 at 9 p.m. at the Patterson-Appleton Arts Center at 400 E. Hickory St. And poet Verb Kulture will host the "Poetry Get Down and Slam" competition.

Festival passes and tickets are on sale at the event's website, DentonBFF.com. Admission is free for ages 2 and younger but children "must sit in your lap." Passes range from $20 to $179 through Jan. 25. Prices go up after that.
