Nuclear threat as comedy: This was a daring gambit back in 1964, when Armageddon was't the name of a bad movie but an everyday concern. The same year also saw a dramatic version of doomsday, Sidney Lumet's Fail-Safe. Strangelove is the satirical take, and it'll still make you laugh until you hurt.
