According to one website, this is the Christmas movie Texans Google most

Have you squeezed in your annual viewing of Dr. Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas (the 2000 movie that most people just call The Grinch) yet? Aw, who am I kidding? You've probably already watched it two or three times at least in the month of December alone.

I mean, according to data from real estate company Estately, we Texans are very enthusiastic about Jim Carrey being mean and green.

The site took the past 11 years of Google Trends data to find out which movies each state Googled the most. According to their numbers, the people of Texas (along with six other states, including Oklahoma and New Mexico) are most interested in Googling How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

There are a lot of reasons to call shenanigans on these results, though.

For one thing, Estately was only focusing on 10 Christmas movies:

  • National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
  • Elf
  • Miracle on 34th Street
  • A Charlie Brown Christmas
  • Scrooged
  • It's a Wonderful Life
  • Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas
  • Home Alone
  • A Christmas Story
  • The Santa Clause

The reason being that they were digging through Facebook data for references to those 10 films to try to gauge which states were "most enthused" about Christmas movies in general. Texas is, according to them, smack dab in the middle of the road in that regard, placing 25th on the list of 50 states when it comes to Christmas movie enthusiasm.

(California, which everybody knows is full of Christmas-hating heathens, doesn't seem to care about classics like It's A Wonderful Life at all. They and Hawaii are at the bottom of the "enthused" list.)

The choice of 10 Christmas movies itself screws up the data. Where's Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer? Where's The Muppet Christmas Carol? Heck, where's the animated version of How the Grinch Stole Christmas?

Speaking of, is this data counting people who just searched for The Grinch? Because that's all I ever call the live-action movie (the full Dr. Seuss' title is official, but theater marketing for the movie only ever called it "The Grinch"). Does that throw a bigger wrench into things?

And when people search for "How The Grinch Stole Christmas," are they actually searching for the 2000 movie? Maybe they're looking for the book? Or a toy? Or the soundtrack with that Faith Hill song we all cry to?
