New 'Independence Day: Resurgence' trailer brings back the Goldblum, oh, and the alien menace

Man, the first Independence Day was awesome. You had Will Smith at a career high kicking some alien bum and Jeff Goldblum and Bill Pullman rounding at a great cast. The alien mothership was brought down using reverse engineering and everything was peaceful.

Fast-forward to what will be almost 20 years later. Humanity has used the technology left behind by the invaders to construct weapons, military vehicles and more, building a foundation from tragedy. Unfortunately, the mothership has returned and it's brought a whole mess of friends with it.

Now, when Resurgence was announced, it was hard to get excited for. It was going to be a sequel to a movie from 1996 that no one particularly wanted a sequel to, especially without Will Smith. But this new trailer has put those qualms to rest.

With a chills-inducing soapbox speech and a muted look at destruction, the film looks to be taking on a darker tone this time around.

With Will Smith's character killed off-screen in a weapon-testing incident (this is explained on the film's official website) we're introduced to a new round of recruits led by Liam Hemsworth's character, and they seem to be teaming up with Goldblum and crew to figure out a new way to take down the invaders. Smith's character's son, Dylan, will also play an integral part in the film.

With the rest of the original cast returning, it looks like Independence Day: Resurgence, at the very least, will be a fun ride. Plus, the last few years of alien invasion movies haven't been the best. Remember Battle: Los Angeles? Yeesh.
