Disney/Marvel

Your time and money are valuable, so you should invest them in good movies. Here are some films in theaters this week that have been approved by our in-house critics and/or reviewers from elsewhere on the internet.

Black Panther

You don't need to see any previous Marvel movies to understand or appreciate Black Panther, which is good, because there is a lot here to enjoy. Our own Dawn Burkes says, "This is an origin story, globe-trotting spy thriller and fantasy, all in one. The movie manages to be part of, but something completely different than, the Marvel superhero movies that came before." Read her full review.

Early Man

Variety says, "Early Man is as charming as they come, bursting with the kind of daffy humor and off-kilter characters that have earned [Aardman Animations] a worldwide following."

The 15:17 to Paris

Our own Chris Vognar says, "[Clint] Eastwood will be 88 in May. If I'm doing anything when I'm 88 as well he makes movies, I'll be a very happy 88-year-old. ... There's boldness to 15:17's unusual structure, a stubbornness that flies in the face of expectation."

Peter Rabbit

This adaptation of the beloved children's books may turn off some fans who are purists of the source material, but it often manages to be both fun and touching. As The Boston Globe puts it, "Even though this thoroughly contemporary adaptation frequently tramples the gentle whimsy of Potter's creation like so many bunnies overrunning a vegetable garden, it's also irresistibly entertaining."

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle

The Washington Post says, "It is smarter and more humorous than the first movie, and its digital effects - which include stampeding albino rhinos and mountain-scraping aerobatics - are far snazzier, as one would expect."
