Dallas restaurant owner 'betrayed and sad' after Donald Trump Jr. and Ted Cruz photographed with Barack Obama cookie cake

President Donald Trump's oldest son lit up the Internet with an Instagram post that seemed to mock former president Barack Obama. The talked-about photos were taken during a private birthday party at a restaurant called Le Bilboquet in Dallas on Sunday, and the owner of the restaurant has said he feels "betrayed and sad" after the photos were published.

The trio of photos included Texas senator Ted Cruz posing with Donald Trump Jr. and the cookie cake with Obama's face made out of frosting. In other photos, Trump, Jr. looks disapprovingly at the cake.

Trump Jr was in Dallas to celebrate a friend's 40th birthday, he said on Instagram. The Obama cake was a gift for Trump Jr because his own 40th birthday is coming up on New Year's Eve.

On Monday morning, Le Bilboquet owner Stephan Corseau explained that the event was not a partisan rally.

"I believe I owe you an explanation and an apology," he wrote on Instagram.

The cake was not baked by his restaurant, he said.

"Restaurant business is about creating a hospitable environment for all, a non-partisan, non-politicized, nondiscriminatory and respectful environment," he says in a statement. "The fact that guests decided to use our restaurant as platform to promote, disrespect, and spread hatred goes against everything we stand for."

It's not the first time Trump Jr. has used sugary treats to create social media firestorms. Last year, he used his Twitter account to compare refugees to Skittles. In October, he joked that he was going to take away half of his daughter's Halloween candy "to teach her about socialism."
