This modern-day speakeasy is concealed behind a candy-store facade, between a 7-Eleven and Deep Sushi, on Elm Street. Entry is gained only by knowing a password, which changes weekly. The mystery isn’t overtaxing, however. A neon “T&A” sign beams from above. The password is featured on Truth & Alibi’s Facebook page.

In keeping with the speakeasy concept, Truth & Alibi puts considerable stock in its cocktail menu. For the most part, the drinks are classics tweaked to the sweet side, such as a $12 Manhattan dosed with Grand Marnier and a $10 whiskey sour given a float of Malbec wine.

Long and narrow, Truth & Alibi is a demented drawing room, wrapped in wallpaper and dripping chandeliers, crammed with overstuffed seating and carefully jumbled curiosities including a red antique telephone booth and a large portrait of Vladimir Lenin. How that strikes you gauges your tolerance for Soviet-era kitsch. — Mr. Dallas
