Stores dedicated to tacky Christmas sweaters pop up in Dallas and Frisco

Editor's note: This story has been updated to reflect the details of the 2018 pop-up shops.

Some may say the first week of November is too early to begin thinking about Christmas, but not Jeremy Turner. The owner of the Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop is bringing holiday cheer (and swag) to Dallas and Frisco when his network of pop-up stores open for the season.

Turner is formerly the owner of the Vintage Mobile, a school bus turned vintage clothing shop he drove selling consignment wares. His biggest sellers every year were tacky Christmas sweaters, so in 2013, Turner got off the road and into a pop-up shop in Dallas. Demand grew steadily and he was able to open two new Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop locations in 2016. Unfortunately, the location in Fort Worth won't return in 2018 since it was the smallest and did the fewest number of sales, Turner says. (He's also the owner/manager of a totally tubular, '80s-themed Airbnb, so he's got a lot going on.)

But as long as there are customers to dress in Dallas and Frisco, he'll be there with the goods.

"I really thought it wouldn't last. I thought it was just a trend, but it really isn't," Turner says of demand for holiday sweaters. "I think it'll be here for a while. Now it's become a tradition."

The Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop in Dallas opened Nov. 8, followed by the location in Frisco on Nov. 15. (Addresses and hours of operation below.)

Turner plans to have an inventory of "well over 10,000" tacky treasure to choose from between the two outfitters. Sweaters at the Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop range $19.99 for some of the basic designs up to $40-plus for more intricate ones. There will also be a box of sale items that cost $12.99 for one sweater, $19.99 for two and $25 for three, he says.

Expanding to Fort Worth and Frisco in 2016 was an experiment, Turner says, but it proved a love of tacky Christmas sweaters is not bound by geography.

"They were both a huge hit," Turner says, opting not to give a total for the number of sweaters he sold. "Maybe in the future we'll bring [Fort Worth's shop] back, but this year it was hard to imagine doing it."
