It's National Beer Day! Where and what to drink in Dallas-Fort Worth

Happy National Beer Day, y’all!

Plenty in my circles celebrate this holiday year-round, but April 7 is apparently special because of a 1933 law that re-legalized the sale of beer near the end of Prohibition. Either way, sounds like a fine excuse to raise a pint. Here are our suggestions for a bubblin’ good time:

Where beer is made

Brewers create beer with the intention of drinkers trying it where it's freshest, namely the brewery. Since the laws changed several years ago, many North Texas breweries have a taproom onsite where you can try the goods. If you're hungry, hit one of Dallas-Fort Worth's brewpubs, several of which serve chef-driven menus. And we always recommend stepping out of your comfort zone, so if you haven't tasted beer from the 14 operations that opened last year, give them a shot. Don't forget some of the newbies to the scene either, such as Backcountry Brewery and Malai Kitchen in Southlake, which both opened in 2016.

New bars in town

Considering craft beer is $22 billion industry, it makes sense there's an ever-increasing number of places to buy it. In addition to stalwarts like Goodfriend Beer Garden and Burger House, we suggest newer watering holes such as Goat Ranch near Fair Park, (the reopened) Dallas Beer Kitchen on Greenville Avenue, Whippersnapper on Henderson, Lone Star Taps and Caps in Denton or Varsity Tavern in Fort Worth. Located in the 'burbs? Check out these 10 bars built for craft beer nerds.

What to drink

If you're more the type to celebrate at home, we have recommendations for you too. McKinney's Franconia Brewing Co. recently debuted a series of non-German recipes that vary with the season. Martin House Brewing  Co. re-released it breakfast beer, Day Break,  in 12-ounce cans (with a hilarious commercial to boot). We're also fond of Fire Ant Funeral from Texas Ale Project, Barrel-Aged Cherry Chocolate Double Brown Ale from Deep Ellum Brewing Co. and Berrito from Oskar Blues Brewery, which is soon opening a Texas satellite facility. If you want to try something fresh out the presses, go for Lakewood Brewing Co.'s All Call Kolsch or Rabbit Hole Brewing's Ryeteous, which debuted at last weekend's Big Texas Beer Fest.

And, hell, if you're not in the mood to drink, here are 5 things you can do with beer besides drink it.

Events

Like I said earlier, the party isn't limited to one day. Check out all the upcoming events as well as our favorite "hoppening" festival this spring, and please remember to drink responsibly.
