Gift ideas for your 'situationship'

It happens to the best of us.

You met one night this fall in Lower Greenville. Made out in an Uber headed to their place and that was the end of it. Except, it wasn't. After noodling for a couple months now, it's not bae but it's something.

Since you've already mistimed cuffing season, here are some holiday shopping tips to make sure you don't mess up your title-less, text-only situationship.

  • Don't spend too much: Free stuff from your job is absolutely in play, as long as it doesn't have a company logo. (I'm looking at you, bluetooth selfie stick.)
That adorable coffee mug set you got from Secret Santa doesn't suit you, but I bet you know who it's perfect for.  If you're really cash-strapped, sharing the password to your streaming service of choice is a consideration. Just be prepared to change that once this all fizzles out.
  • Don't reach: Don't act like you know a lot about this person. You've never met their parents, probably only a couple friends and a roommate that've seen you leaving their place. Now is not the time to throw a Hail Mary.
That Ava DuVernay Barbie for their niece you've only seen pictures of on Instagram? Entirely too personal. Matching pairs of 72-10s? Absolutely not.
In fact, any clothing beyond a weather-appropriate accessory bearing their alma mater or favorite sports team is pushing it. Obnoxiously large version of the candy they always eat when you Netflix & Chill? Tasty and appropriate.
  • Things you could share: Gift cards are really the CBS sitcom of holiday gifting: thoughtless, generic, but serviceable in all their unoffensive glory.
Hate the music in they play around the house? iTunes gift card with an album suggestion.
Coffee shop you really like? Boom! Gift card with just enough on it so you both can go.
Liquor is also a classic choice here. Overachievers may even build a custom six-pack.
  • Meeting your friends: If you're looking to turn this into more, giving them a glimpse into your actual life may be the biggest gift of them all.
  • Nothing is an option: Don't ever forget you can do absolutely nothing. It's only the handful of us who were raised right who really even worry about these things. Feel free to chuck the deuces and start 2016 fresh.
