Need a tacky Christmas sweater? Choose from 10,000 at Dallas store

Mounds of sweaters lay across the floor of an otherwise seemingly uninhabited room. The calendar is quickly closing in on the holidays, which for entrepreneur Jeremy Turner, who stands among the piles of clothes, means one thing: tacky Christmas sweater season.

Turner is the brains behind Dallas' Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop, which will pop up Nov. 21 through Dec. 26 in the Mockingbird Commons shopping center in East Dallas for a third year running. The shop has become a holiday staple with more than 10,000 Christmas ugly sweaters gracing racks inside.

After managing a school bus he turned into a vintage shop on wheels, known as the VintageMobile, Turner decided to find a temporary storefront where customers in search of tacky treasures could come dig through the gems. That was in 2013, and despite the notion one sweater could get several years of use, Turner says demand increases every year.

His first year in the space, Turner sold 5,000 sweaters and last year he sold even more than that, he says.

"One of the neatest things about the store is it gets everybody," he says, from little kids to people in their 60s. "Ugly doesn't discriminate."

The Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop sells both kids sweaters ($11.99-$14.99) and adult sweaters ($18.99-$49.99), along with strands of battery-operated Christmas lights for extra decoration. All are true vintage pieces supplied from a source Turner likes to keep on the hush.

It's worth noting the tackier the sweater, the pricier it will be. But it's also Christmas shopping to feel good about -- at the end of the season, the Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop will donate 5 percent of sales to International Justice Mission, which combats slavery worldwide.

Richardson residents will have an additional opportunity to grab a tacky sweater without making the drive. Turner is hosting nine themed events at Alamo Drafthouse where a selection of his vintage gear will be for sale. Here's the schedule (click individual movies for more details):
