4 fashionable ways to celebrate Earth Day

Picking up scraps of trash isn't the only way to help Madame Earth. There are plenty of ways to give back before, during, and after Earth Day, which is April 22. Here are a few suggestions on how to give back in a fashion-forward fashion.

Pay it fur-ward

How often do you really wear that fur coat? You know who might like it more? Baby squirrels. Baby squirrels need the feel of real fur to help them relax in a natural environment while on the road to physical recovery. From now until April 22, you can donate your real fur coats and accessories to the Coats for Cubs program at Buffalo Exchange. All donated furs are sent to furry friends in rehabilitation organizations across the country. 3424 Greenville Ave., Dallas. 214-826-7544.

Send in the hose

Those winter tights you bought to make it through Icepocalypse aren't going to smell any better next year and the holes just get bigger. If you toss them in the trash, they wind up in landfills. If you mail them to No nonsense's tights recycling program, you reduce your "fashion carbon footprint." The program recycles the Nylon/ Spandex blends in tights to make park benches, running tracks and even playgrounds. Just visit the website to print a label, mail it in, and let the good juju flow.

Runways and boots

Earth Day Texas is one festival making a green lifestyle oh, so chic. For one, there's a fashion show in the works. Details on that haven't been announced yet, but you can count on that show and a Kat Mendenhall booth exhibiting her vegan handmade boots. Vegan boots. Only in Texas. Admission is free. The festival runs April 24-26 at Fair Park, open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Scoot in style

Motorized scooters might not be as eco-friendly as bikes, but they are better than a diesel-guzzling Dodge Ram, and you could win one at this year's Oak Cliff Earth Day Celebration. One vendor, Friends of Oak Cliff Parks, is selling 200 raffle tickets to win a romantic-looking little scooter. Because the raffle is so small, tickets are $25 each, but your chances aren't bad. And, hey, all proceeds go to help a local park -- which you can then whiz by every day feeling extra good about your do-gooding. If you don't win, just have fun checking out the more than 130 participating vendors as you traipse up and down trendy Oak Cliff. Admission is free. The heart of the festival can be found on the corner of Colorado and Zang boulevards.
