If you’re in the market to purchase, a recently opened vintage pop-up shop in East Dallas has you covered. The Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop, located in the Mockingbird Commons strip mall, has returned for a second year with a fresh inventory of 10,000 used and vintage sweaters. (See pictures of our favorites here.)
For many years, the shop’s owner and operator, Jeremy Turner, sold his wacky and tacky collection of holiday garb from a school bus he turned into a clothing store, known as the VintageMobile. In 2013, he took his business off the road and into a temporary storefront, where he sold 5,000 sweaters.
“The response was huge last year, there’s no better way to put it,” Turner says, adding that he expects sales to surpass that in 2014.
Christmas sweater parties, which he previously called anew part of the American Christmas tradition, are spurring demand, he says.
The Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop sells both kids sweaters ($14.99-$19.99) and adult sweaters ($19.99-$44.99), along with strands of battery-operated Christmas lights for extra decoration. It’s worth noting the tackier the sweater, the pricer it will be. There’s even one with hair sewn on for Santa’s beard and other 3-D nicknacks on sale for $64.99.
Patrons can try on sweaters and snap a picture in front of three kitschy backdrops in the store. Upload a picture to social media and tag the Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop to receive 5 percent off purchases.
The Ugly Christmas Sweater Shop is open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday through Wednesday, and 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday until December 27, unless inventory sells out before that date.
Special hours for Thanksgiving week: Open 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday; 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. Closed Thursday and Friday.
