An animated 'Super Mario' movie is in the works from the studio that brought you 'Minions'

Following a lot of rumors and reports, Nintendo has confirmed that their world famous plumber (well, former plumber) is heading back to the big screen.

The video game publisher has partnered with Illumination, the animation studio known for Despicable Me, Minions, The Secret Life of Pets and Sing. The movie will be co-produced by Super Mario Bros. creator Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination founder Chris Meledandri.

Sadly, that's all we know at the moment. There was no timetable given for the film, for any hint about its plot. This leaves a lot of unanswered questions. For example, will Mario, who is normally a mostly silent protagonist in the video games, talk? Will he play sports? Will he get on the dance floor and "Do the Mario"?

One thing we can pretty safely bet, though: It will almost certainly be better than the 1993 live-action Super Mario Bros. movie starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo.
