Need weekend plans? We have you covered!

Birthday fit for a King

Elvis Presley would have turned 84 years old on Jan. 8 and his legacy remains stronger than ever. One of the men helping keeping the sounds of the King alive is Kraig Parker, a tribute artist who has been filling Presley's blue suede shoes for about 20 years. Parker performs with his 10-piece band at an Elvis Birthday Celebration at Irving Arts Center on Friday, and he'll be introduced by Presley's former tour manager Charles Stone. Tickets to join the party start at $26.50.

Films galore

Best of Fests Film Festival

Movie buffs are in for a treat this weekend when the Best of Fests Film Festival takes over North Texas. This event is a partnership between 22 local film festivals, which have each chosen one noteworthy flick to bring to local audiences. The movies will be screened Thursday through Sunday at venues such as Alamo Drafthouse, Angelika Film Center, and Studio Movie Grill. Tickets are $10 per screening or $50 for a festival pass. Peep the list of documentaries and short films at bestoffests.org.

To see, or not to see?

That's the question on deck this weekend when Shakespeare Dallas kicks off a run of performances of Hamlet. The troupe brings the production to the Moody Performance Hall in Dallas from Jan. 11 through Jan. 20. Tickets range $25 to $35, depending on when you want to go.

Start the New Year strong

Hotcake Hustle

If one of your New Year's resolutions is to get in shape, consider hitting the Hotcake Hustle. Participants can run a 5K or 10K, and then reward themselves with pancakes and live music afterward. What excellent motivation! The race kicks off at 8 a.m. on Saturday at the Addison Conference and Theatre Center, and registration starts at $30 for a fun run, and goes up to $50 for the 5K and $60 for the 10K.

If your resolution is to learn a new skill, the Mozzarella Company in Dallas is hosting a Hands On Cheesemaking Class. For $75, you can learn techniques and tricks to making your own cheese, as well as taste test an assortment of fresh and aged cheeses. The class comes with wine, too, so there's extra incentive. The class starts at noon on Saturday.

Tiney Ricciardi offers her weekend event picks every Thursday at 8:40 a.m. on KLIF-AM (570).
