It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas
The holidays are right around the corner and if you need a little bit of cheer, the Gaylord Texan is your place. The annual ICE! installation opens to the public Friday, and it's really something to behold. Engineers use 2 million pounds of ice to create this indoor wonderland filled with sculptures and slides built from ice. If you're wondering how they keep it all from melting, know the Gaylord keeps the environment below freezing temperatures and attendees get parkas to wear inside. You'll also want to bring hats, gloves and scarves to keep warm.
This year's theme is 'Twas the Night Before Christmas, so expect to find scenes from the holiday poem depicted in ice. Tickets cost $12.99 for kids and $21.99 for adults. And if you can't make it opening weekend, ICE! will be around until Jan. 1.
Hope you're hungry
Hungry locals can feast on two foodie festivals this weekend. First is the Fort Worth Greek Food Festival, which runs Friday through Sunday at the St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church. As you can gather from the name, the event focuses on traditional Greek cuisine and includes cooking demonstrations, live music and more fun. Admission costs $1, but you'll also have to buy food while there.
On Sunday, pitmasters will be at the Longhorn Ballroom in Dallas serving up barbecue at the Meat Fight. This is a sampling event, so wear your stretchy pants. A $135 ticket buys entry and bites from 20 smokehouses plus complimentary beer. This is a competition, so chefs will be fighting for the title of best brisket, pork ribs, sausage and more. The fight kicks off at 6 p.m. on Sunday.
Pick a show, any show
There are many concerts and comedy show this weekend. The ones you don't want to miss include Willie Nelson and Family at Billy Bob's Texas in Fort Worth. The band performs both Friday and Saturday night, and tickets start at an affordable $20 for general admission.
On Saturday, The Daily Show host Trevor Noah comes to Toyota Music Factory in Irving for back-to-back shows at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. The early show is sold out, but tickets to the late one are still available starting at $29.50.
And if you still have energy by Monday, Imagine Dragons comes to American Airlines Center with tickets hovering around $345 each.
Salute our veterans
It's worth mentioning that Saturday is Veteran's Day. GuideLive has a list of restaurants honoring our former services members with discounts and freebies. But if you want to show your support, there's a parade Friday morning that steps off from Young and Houston streets before making a loop through downtown. The parade will be preceded by an 11 a.m. presentation at Dallas City Hall featuring a massing of the colors, an 11th-hour ceremony and a performance of taps.
