Where to celebrate Juneteenth and Father's Day in Dallas-Fort Worth

Need weekend plans? We have you covered!

Juneteenth parades and festivals

With two holidays this weekend, there's tons to do in D-FW. Let's start with Juneteenth.

For those who may not know, Juneteenth is a Texas holiday that celebrates when slaves here finally received news of the end of slavery several years after the Emancipation Proclamation went into effect. So no doubt a cause for celebration.

There will be a Juneteenth parade over in Fort Worth near Tarrant County College South Campus on Saturday that kicks off with a 5K race and includes a festival with hip-hop and jazz music, a car show, cookout, carnival and more. The fun runs all day and is free to attend.

Over in Irving, the Jackie Townsell Bear Creek Heritage Center is hosting a Juneteenth Celebration that includes a community picnic and concert, as well as outdoor games and kids' activities. The party runs 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday and is also free.

The Texas Black Invitational Rodeo also kicks up dust on Saturday at Fair Park for its 29th year. Cowboys and cowgirls will be wrestling steers, riding bulls and barrel racing, all that fun stuff. Tickets start at $10 for general admission.

Just for dad

Alright now let's dish on dad. If yours is the kind of cool dad that loves to go to concerts, several bands are in town this weekend that may satisfy his itch for live music. First, Metallica is coming to AT&T Stadium on Friday with Avenged Sevenfold. Tickets are still available for this show and range about $82 to $155 depending on where you want seats.

If you're dad is more of a mellow music man, Boz Scaggs and Michael McDonald bring their smooth tunes to WinStar World Casino on Friday. This show is cheaper, at $45 per ticket. However some VIP seats are available for more than that.

If your dad is into barbecue, Fearing's Restaurant in Dallas is having a Father's Day brunch Sunday morning that includes three courses of BBQ paired with locally-made bourbon and bluegrass music. That's $75 a head with a reservation.

If you're just looking for some classic fun, take dad to Topgolf for a couple rounds. There's a new location that just opened in Fort Worth and it has food, drinks and a pretty great view of the downtown skyline.

Summer Block Party vibes

Lastly, I'll mention that The Dallas Museum of Art and the Nasher Sculpture Center in downtown Dallas are having a free Summer Block Party hosted by the Dallas Arts District. Attendees can meander through the galleries, watch a movie in the Nasher garden and take in a little bit of live music. The fun there begins at 6 p.m. on Friday.
