Get free admission to six museums during Wednesday's International Museum Day

International Museum Day — May 18 — was founded 39 years ago to raise awareness of the value of museums in society’s development and the exchange of ideas around the globe. Last year, more than 35,000 museums in 145 countries participated in the event, offering visitors special programs and often waiving admission fees. Coinciding with the celebration is Art Museum Day, sponsored by the Association of Art Museum Directors, a group of more than 150 North American museums.

Here’s what some local museums are doing to celebrate on May 18:

Dallas Museum of Art

Admission is always free to visit the museum's permanent collection and most exhibitions; a gallery talk related to its "Vermeer Suite" exhibit happens at 12:15 p.m. 1717 N. Harwood St., Dallas. dma.org.

Irving Arts Center

Celebrate visual and performing arts with always-free admission to the center's four galleries as well as a performance by the Lone Star Youth Orchestra (tickets are $6.50-$13.50).
