Polar Plunge

Brr! If you're missing swimming at this time of year and don't mind the (extreme) cold, head to the Fraternal Order of Eagles for the fourth annual Hypnotic Donuts Polar Plunge. As if it weren't cold enough outside on its own, Hypnotic has arranged for Emergency Ice Co. to dump ice into the pool and provide a snow machine so plungers can take a dive in really -- and we mean really -- cold water then play in the snow. Deep Ellum Brewing Company will be on site and food will be available. All proceeds from the plunge will benefit the Greater Dallas chapter of the Alzheimer's Association, so donations are definitely welcome. Want to watch the plunge in the comfort of your winter coat? Spectators are welcome, too.

No Pants Subway Ride

In 2002, a New York improv group had seven guys board subway trains wearing full winter wardrobes of hats, gloves, coats and scarves -- but no pants. The pantless riders acted as if nothing were amiss, and if asked about their lack of leg coverings, responded with something along the lines of, "Oh! I forgot them." The next year, more than 30 people, including women, participated, and by 2008, the event had gone international. Last year, the event took place in more than 60 cities in 25 countries. Hundreds of people participate in the Dallas ride (even though DART isn't technically a subway); expect to see every type of underwear that exists, and lots of skin. If you want to partake, be sure what you're wearing is street-legal; organizers say the goal is less shock, more laughter. Meet up (wearing pants — it's cold out!) at the fountain across from Union Station in downtown Dallas; if you want to see the spectacle, get out your DART pass and head out on any line.

Parker, who has won an Emmy, a Tony Award and two Golden Globes for her performances in Angels of America, Proof and Weeds, will share stories from her recently published Dear Mr. You, a series of letters to men, real and imagined, who helped shape the person she has become.

Malanka: Ukrainian New Year's Eve Celebration

Just when you thought that New Year's Eve celebrations were winding down, the Ukrainian American Society of Texas invites you to its 32nd annual celebration of Malanka, named for a folk tale about Mother Earth. Malanka celebrates the new year based on the Julius Caesar- created Julian calendar (the world now mostly uses the Gregorian calendar), which falls on Jan. 13, though many times it's celebrated earlier. The party will feature social time, cocktails, dinner, raffle prizes, a silent auction, performances by Veselka Singing Group and Zorya Dance Ensemble and dancing to Ukrainian and American music. At midnight, ring in the new year with a champagne toast and the Ukrainian Hopak dance.
