Kaboom Town is not only an annual tradition for Addison, it's also one for families all across the region. The event has been consistently ranked as one of the nation's top fireworks displays by the American Pyrotechnic Association and publications such as USA Today.
There is more to Kaboom Town than fireworks, though. Here are some tips to help you enjoy all the event has to offer.
It's best for all concerned if you park in the garages set aside for Kaboom Town, ones that are quite near Addison Circle Park. Or take a ride service (there's a coupon on the event website). There are four garages, three along Dallas Parkway: Millennium Garage, Colonnade Garage, Addison Circle One Garage and Addison Circle Two Garage. There is handicap parking available at the DART parking lot at 4925 Arapaho Road.
To guarantee a parking spot (along with a spot in the park), take advantage of one of the hotel packages tied to the event.
Get there early, stay late
Gates open at 4 p.m. Follow the signs for the entrance at Quorum Drive and Addison Circle Drive. There are a couple of things you want: a good sitting area and a good view. You can try getting there at the last minute, but if you do that, you'll just be left wanting something you can't have.
Emerald City will perform at 10 p.m. Sit a spell and enjoy the show while everyone else makes a mad dash for the exits. A 20-minute trip home can turn into a 3-hour tour because of the road closures and the amount of traffic in the small area around the park. You want to wait with the band, or in the car?
Sure, organizers have thought of everything, including putting ATMs on the grounds between the carnival and a couple of dozen food stands. If you hate convenience fees, though, it's worth it to use your own bank before you get there. This is a warning: Not everyone -- I'm looking at you, carnival -- will take your credit or debit card.
Wear good shoes
Many a flip-flop has had to call it a day, mainly because they can't make it to the night. And that's a shame since the fireworks don't even get started until 9:30 p.m. With restless children in tow, this is especially important because you will have to do a lap or two around the food stands, carnival rides and games to let them get their
Not only should you take the children -- or yourself -- to the rides first, you should consider doing it last, too. Though you can see the fireworks from across Addison, it's an open secret that the best view is from the carnival grounds.
Collapsible bag, collapsible chairs
Getting to Addison Circle Park early means you'll be at Kaboom Town almost six hours before the fireworks even begin at 9:30 p.m. Chances are you'll want a bag -- a backpack per family member is a good bet -- and a chair before that. It's a good idea to bring everything that's on the allowed items list; that includes small coolers; snacks; umbrellas; and binoculars. Note that outside alcoholic beverages are not allowed, and your bag will be searched.
Plan your life: Kaboom Town will be on Tuesday, July 3, from 5 p.m. to midnight at Addison Circle Park, 4970 Addison Circle Drive, Addison. Admission is free. Gates open at 4. addisonkaboomtown.com
