This vegetarian dish is the most popular Thanksgiving recipe in Texas right now

According to Google search data, meat-free dishes are in high demand this year.

Surprisingly, the most sought after Thanksgiving dish for Texans this year isn’t one of the traditional favorites. Well, at least according to one new study.

Stuffed butternut squash is the most popular Thanksgiving dish in Texas in 2022, says a study conducted by YorkTest. The survey combed through the top Thanksgiving recipe Google searches by state over the past year and found that vegetarian dishes are some of the most searched for nationwide.

The data highlights a growing interest in vegetarian dining and swapping out meat for vegetarian entrees, the study says. Research from the Alliance for Science found that as of January 2022, 10% of U.S. adults over the age of 18 consider themselves vegan or vegetarian. That’s up from just 5% in 2018.

“Traditionally, Thanksgiving is a very turkey-focused celebration, so it’s great to see a rising appreciation for vegetarian and vegan recipes across the nation,” said Kerri Ferraioli, an expert nutritionist at YorkTest. “Butternut squash is a great source of antioxidants, including vitamin C and vitamin E.”

Typically, stuffed butternut squash recipes call for filling the hollowed-out squash with a mixture of grains and other vegetables, which makes the dish a good option for vegans, but meat and dairy can easily be incorporated.
