What's a mochi doughnut? Fat Straws Bubble Tea shop is selling them in Richardson

We thought we'd seen everything a doughnut could do. Nope: A shop called Fat Straws Bubble Tea Co. is opening in Richardson on June 1 and selling mochi doughnuts — a fried pastry that resembles a flower.

Mochi doughnuts are made with mochi, a sticky rice cake sometimes filled with ice cream and sold in shops and grocery stores that are hip to this Japanese dessert. At Fat Straws, the doughnuts are made with rice flour and tapioca flour, with matcha on top of the glaze. We're seeing lots of matcha in Dallas right now.

The shop is owned by Terry and Jennifer Pham. Terry's parents were born in Vietnam and he is a first-generation American; Jennifer was born in Korea.

"My father passed away when I was 2 years old and my mother supported four kids by herself by working at 7-Eleven," Terry says in a prepared statement. "I didn't realize it at the time, but that's where I learned about power service, hospitality and community."

Fat Straws is best known for its bubble tea, but the mochi doughnuts are an interesting new twist. Other menu items at the Richardson shop (and the other three existing shops) are milk teas, tea infusions (like peach jasmine or strawberry black tea), smoothies, slushes and milkshakes. As is common at bubble tea shops, customers can add tapioca bubbles or jellies to any drink.

The new Fat Straws is located at 1251 W. Campbell Road, Richardson.
