I had to see it myself to be sure it was true. Sadly, it is: Local Press + Brew is locked up, shades down. The shop selling my favorite coffee drink in Dallas has closed — both its original shop in Oak Cliff and its smaller, newer store Victory Park.

The news was first reported by the Dallas Observer

Local Press was known for its simple coffee menu, pressed juices and drinks for anyone doing a cleanse. For me, it was my spot for one specific drink, a coconut Americano: a cored-out coconut, the coconut water still inside, topped with a shot of espresso.

Confirmed: Local Press + Brew closed. And sad: My all-time favorite coffee drink came from the original in Oak Cliff, pictured here.

"Obsessed might not be a strong enough word for how much I love this 'cup' of coffee," I wrote in 2017. It was one of the only indulgences I enjoyed while doing Whole30, and after that month, I found myself back in Oak Cliff time and time again to sip another coconut-coffee drink. It was like the beach sprung up in the middle of North Beckley Avenue — it was my coffee drink while I dreamed of vacation, no flight required.

Owners Ben and Tiffany Johnson didn't return a request for comment, but they told the Observer that they hope to open another coffee shop in North Texas. They also operated a motorcycle repair shop in Oak Cliff called Local Moto, and they plan to move that to an address on East Grand Avenue, near Fair Park.

A sign on the front door of the shuttered Oak Cliff shop says, "Change is good." It is. But I'll be missing the coconut Americano at this funky Oak Cliff shop.

Here's one of my favorite photos of my daughter, Hayley, on a coffee date at Local Press + Brew.
