Hey, now: Texas mayor says best tacos are 'definitely not in Dallas'

If the question is "where are the best tacos in Texas?" the mayor in a south Texas town wants the answer to be McAllen.

Surely, this "war" was reignited after a D Magazine cover story declared that "Dallas is tops" as a taco city. But way back in 2016, the mayors in Austin and San Antonio had already declared a taco truce after a great debate over breakfast tacos. (We've already settled that debate locally, anyhow: D-FW's best tacos are from R(usty) Taco, according to your votes.)

A long time later, Mayor of McAllen Jim Darling is here to say: Yoo hoo! We are here for this.

His reasoning is puzzling at best, offensive at worst: Tacos in McAllen are awesome because many of its residents are unhealthy, Darling says.

"McAllen used to be the fattest city in the nation. We didn't earn that title by eating lettuce wraps."

He also defines McAllen as "the real south Texas," saying, "any further south and you're gonna need a passport." And then he pours salsa verde on top of the D Magazine cover.
