Caffeinate and inebriate at two new D-FW coffee shops also selling beer and wine

North Texans thirsting for a new coffee shop now have two options that offer more than one kind of buzz. Whether you're craving a pick-me-up in the form of coffee, beer or wine, these spots have you covered.

Civil Pour

As founders of Dallas' annual spring event Big Texas Beer Fest, Chad and Nellie Montgomery long dreamed of opening a place where they could keep the party going year round. That dream came true over Labor Day weekend when the couple opened Civil Pour, a coffee shop and beer bar located in North Dallas.

Their original plan was not to open a cafe, but rather "a brewery that only served barrel-aged beers," says Chad. After three years of searching for a location and watching dozens of new breweries open in North Texas, however, the couple decided to change course to focus on coffee while still being able to sell beer.

Civil Pour in habits a 2,500-square-foot space on Walnut Hill Lane, across the street from Spec's liquor store. That's why Chad says the beer selection will focus on brews not typically available in cans or bottles.

"The biggest beer store in Dallas is right out our front door," he says. "If someone can go over there and buy it for a third of the price, why are they going to buy it here? There's no reason."

The bar has 30 taps serving beer, sodas, kombucha, and cold-brewed coffee and tea. And if you find something you like, you can take it home in a growler or crowler, a 16-ounce aluminum can that's filled with draft beer and sealed onsite. Civil Pour uses a Gruber growler filling machine that purges each vessel with carbon dioxide before filling it with beer, similarly to professional breweries, so the suds will keep for weeks. Nellie says the machine, which cost $25,000, is the first one to land in Texas.

If you're looking for a caffeine buzz, Civil Pour offers staple espresso drinks such as a latte, Americano, cappuccino and more. There are also more inventive offerings like the Shakerado, a mix of espresso, simple syrup, and orange bitters served over ice, and the 1885, which combines espresso with sugar cane Dr Pepper.

Pearl Cup Sip

Pearl Cup opened its first coffee shop in Dallas in 2007 before expanding to three additional locations in the region. All but the one in Richardson have closed, but the company has new owners who recently debuted a variation of the concept.

Pearl Cup Sip, now open in Plano, maintains its roots as a coffee shop while adding wine to the menu. There are also sandwiches, salads and shareable plates like loaded street fries for pairing.

"Pearl Cup Sip, takes everything we love about the Pearl coffeehouse, and extends those characteristics into the evening when folks gather together to wind down with a good glass of wine, share a snack and decompress," said co-owner Farrah Yeager in a statement.

The coffee shop serves its signature Pearl Latte, alongside novelties like the frozen Mexican hot chocolate and the Black Pearl, a mocha version of the Pearl Latte. Drip, pour-over and French press coffee is also available.

The 1,300-square-foot space is located in Plano's Boardwalk at Granite Park district, which is also home to Union Bear brewpub, Hookline seafood joint and other restaurants. Each concept has its own patio space that bellies up to a shared boardwalk.

Pearl Cup is also planning two locations in Dallas -- a wine bar in Preston Hollow and a coffee shop in University Park -- which are expected to open near the end of the year.
