Now open: A 'french fry cafe' in Deep Ellum

Back in December, we reported that Deep Ellum was getting a french fry cafe. Well, it's here, and we're still just as giddy.

#getfried Fry Cafe is located at Main and Pryor streets, just across from Pecan Lodge. Walk in and there's seating on the right, fries on the left. Fries come thin, straight cut, waffle, curly, sweet potato and even in funnel cake varieties. Fries can be ordered Dutch style -- your choice of fries and one of 20 sauces -- or as a basket, which is what Chris Covelli, founder and CEO of #getfried Fry Cafe, recommends to first-timers order.

Baskets are basically loaded french fries. Covelli says popular ones include the 716 -- fries topped with chicken, buffalo sauce and blue cheese or ranch -- and poutine -- fries with gravy and cheese curds. Covelli predicts that Dallasites will enjoy the Southern Comfort -- brisket or chicken with barbecue sauce -- or the Texas Cheese Fries -- cheese, bacon, chives, chili powder and more cheese.

The frying doesn't stop with fries, though. #getfried also sells chicken fingers and Buffalo Crunch Rolls -- pieces of buffalo chicken wrapped in a crispy shell and deep fried.

The standout on the non-french-fry menu is the Slider Trifecta, which is a selection of mini beef, chicken and brisket patties with waffle fries for buns.

The restaurant is the fifth store in Texas and the first location in Dallas. Muhammad Abdullah, the Dallas franchisee and store owner, is keen on getting the restaurant integrated into Deep Ellum, especially since he isn’t a native Texan himself. Abdullah moved from to Dallas from Arkansas, and he says that surrounding business owners have been giving him a helping hand with #getfried.

“They’re very close to each other and they will help you out like none other,” Abdullah says. “They’ll do whatever it takes to make sure everyone is successful -- I’ve not seen that anywhere.”

Abdullah took a tip from business owners about the decor in his restaurant: Put up some art, and make it local, they said. Abdullah picked Sanah Brown, an artist who has been a part of 42 Murals, a beautification project in Deep Ellum.

Brown's mural pays tribute to the entertainment and musical histories of Deep Ellum and downtown Dallas. (She then sprinkled it with painted french fries, of course.) It’s tribute that Abdullah and Covelli think will bring them -- and their fries -- to a welcoming neighborhood.

“We’re a unique concept and we attract a unique clientele,” Covelli says. “I think we’ll fit in this community tremendously.”
