Heyo, Houston: Lupe Tortilla restaurants are moving into the Dallas area

If you know someone from Houston, you've probably heard them preach about Lupe Tortilla. (The Houstonians I know do the same thing when talking about another beloved Texas brand, grocery store H-E-B. Which is headquartered in San Antonio but still a force in Houston. But that's a whole other thing.)

Well, Houston folks, Dallas diners are getting a Lupe Tortilla. The Tex-Mex restaurant, established 35 years ago in the Houston area, has plans to open D-FW's first Lupe Tortilla in Addison in 2019, according to a company statement. More will open after that, says a spokeswoman.

Lupe co-owner Peter Holt, the son of founder Stan Holt, says opening in Dallas "is something we've been really excited about for a while."

The new Lupe Tortilla at Belt Line and Midway roads will join a busy intersection, with neighboring restaurants that include Fogo de Chao, Chuy's, Spring Creek Barbeque, The Londoner, Blue Goose Cantina and Zoli's NY Pizza.

For now, Lupe Tortilla is a Texas-only brand, with most of its restaurants in Houston but dotting the map in Austin, San Antonio, College Station and Beaumont.

"Texas is a very stable and business-friendly environment, and we love where we are in the state's business climate," co-owner Judson Holt told Food & Drink International in a 2017 story. But he did say "we'll venture outside of Texas at some point in time."

If you want to know what to order at Lupe Tortilla, ask somebody from Houston. My H-town insider loves the Three Pepper Cheese Steak -- 10-ounce carne asada topped with peppers and melted Jack cheese.
