Finally! This year, Girl Scout cookie sales go digital in Dallas

When a Girl Scout knocks on your door, asking politely if you'd like to buy a box of cookies, you can watch her learn about saleswomanship right there on your front stoop. It's not easy to ask a stranger for money.

But it's 2018, y'all, and Amazon Prime is dominating doorsteps. So this year, while the Girl Scouts will continue to sell Thin Mints door-to-door and at public places like grocery stores, many Girl Scouts in Dallas, Collin, Denton counties and beyond will also sell cookies online.

Jeff Bezos would be proud, wouldn't he?

Take 10-year-old Natalia Shattuck of Carrollton. When I met her recently, she proudly presented a business card with her Girl Scout cookie website on it. Yes, a young businesswoman just invited me to a safe space online where I could fork over money for cookies. No cash required. I peeked back at her and she grinned behind a cute pair of glasses. "You can keep that card," she tells me. In case I want more cookies.

So Natalia's got entrepreneurship mastered. She also learned a little bit about digital technology, as she had to develop the skills to create the Digital Cookie website that might just bring her tons of business.

The Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas' foray into selling cookies online jibes with a nationwide effort to get young girls into STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). In fact, a Girl Scouts facility called Camp Whispering Cedars, located in southwest Dallas, will soon have a STEM Center of Excellence opening in May. The facility is described in a news release as "a laboratory for learning in a girls-only environment, offering guided lessons in everything from coding and chemistry to robotics and nature."

It's important to note that the Girl Scouts are not selling a new cookie this year. The Girls are bringing back the S'mores cookie — the one that sold out last year, it was so popular. The old faithfuls are back, too, of course: Thin Mints; Tagalongs (called Peanut Butter Patties in other areas); Samoas (Caramel deLites) and more.
