Your first look at North Italia, a restaurant that adds Italian flavor to Plano's Legacy West

Legacy West, the $400 million residential and commercial development taking shape in Plano, is on its way to being one of the hottest foodie destinations north of 635.

Though it has yet to be completed, hungry people in Plano can currently find famously delicious burgers at Shake Shack, healthy bites at True Food Kitchen, sweet treats at Sprinkles cupcake shop, and steaks at Del Frisco's Double Eagle Steak House. As of this week, developers are adding Italian to that list.

North Italia, opening June 27, specializes in Italian comfort food with an upscale edge -- fitting, since Legacy West is more posh than your average shopping center. (There's a Tesla showroom, after all.)

Patrons will find a selection of pizzas and pastas that range from classic recipes (margherita pizza and spaghetti and meatballs) to more modern twists (fig, goat cheese and prosciutto pizza and squid ink mafaldine). All the pastas are made in-house daily and there's also a gluten-free option. If you're a purist, try the house specialty: bolognese.

For starters, North Italia offers Mediterranean mussels, grilled cauliflower, calamari and, of course, meatballs served with marinara and pecorino cheese. The chef's board comes with two cheeses -- one hard, one soft -- that can be put on bread and accented with grilled asparagus, proscuitto, house-marinated olives, roasted peppers and more.

Entrees, which range $20-$38, include roasted salmon, rosemary chicken, and short rib, among other options. The restaurant also begins serving brunch July 1. (See the all its menus here.)

Walking into North Italia won't transport you to Italy; the restaurant takes on an elegant ambiance in shades of red, black and white. But the place is huge, and one of its most impressive features is the open kitchen, which runs nearly the entire width of the restaurant.

Grab a seat at the bar and take your pick from North Italia's extensive wine list, its small-but-mighty beer menu or a selection of intriguing cocktails, such as Rosemary and Lime featuring Ketel One vodka, Amaro Nonino, rosemary and lime.
