Which Texas city do experts say is best for beer and spirits? Hint: It's not D-FW

Dallas-Fort Worth is home to more than 50 craft breweries, at least 13 small-batch distilleries and innumerable bars where locals can enjoy the alcohol being produced here.

A drinker's paradise? Perhaps, but according to recent rankings of spirits and beer by Travelocity and Men's Journal, respectively, it's not the boozy crown jewel of the Lone Star State.

According to Travelocity, the state's capital is also its spirits capital. The travel company worked with the American Distilling Institute to create its first Craft Spirits Tourism Index, an accompaniment to last year's Craft Beer Tourism Index. It ranked cities nationwide based on the number of small-batch distilleries by population and the number of awards they've won, in addition to travel factors such as accessibility by air and hotel cost.

Austin ranked No. 7 on the list of large cities to visit for locally-made spirits, and was the only place in Texas to make the cut. Travelocity ranked 20 cities in two lists based on the size of the metro area. (It's worth noting that zero cities in Texas cracked the Craft Beer Tourism Index in 2016.)

Separately, the editors at Men's Journal ranked "the 101 best beers in America," presumably so definitive because they are a collection of men with opinions about beer (primarily manly styles like IPAs and stouts, from the looks of the list) and a website on which they can publish them.

The publication listed two beers from Texas they'd seek out while down here, one of which is from — you guessed it — Austin. Men's Journal described the Atrial Rubicite sour ale from Jester King Brewery as "dry" and "effervescent." The other beer mentioned is Yellow Rose IPA from Lone Pint Brewery in Magnolia.

"Yellow Rose is the perfect IPA for Texas heat: blazingly hoppy, yet crisp and refreshing," the editors wrote.
