Ruby's Sno-balls opens today, bringing fluffy shaved ice to East Dallas

So what's the difference between a sno-ball and snow cone? A sno-ball is made of soft, powdery, finely shaved ice rather than the crunchy ice of a snow cone.

Texas doesn't get a whole lot of real snow, but flavorful snow cones are a  popular way to cool off in its long summers. Now, thanks to Ruby's Sno-balls, there's not only another snowy way to combat the heat, but a plethora of flavor options and combinations with which to fight it.

Ruby's opens today at the corner of Haskell Avenue and San Jacinto Street in East Dallas, offering  regular-size sno-balls for  $3-$4 and large ones for $4-$5.

So what's the difference between a sno-ball and a snow cone? Mostly, the ice. A sno-ball is made of soft, powdery, finely shaved ice rather than the crunchy ice of a snow cone. The cane-sugar flavors are easily absorbed into the ice, resulting in equalized flavor throughout the dish. And founder Jessica Fultner is determined not to include preservatives.
