Free ice cream from Ben & Jerry's

It's an annual tradition that could not be sweeter. For the 37th year, Ben & Jerry's offers a free single scoop cone of any flavor at its scoop shops from noon-8 p.m. Tuesday, April 12. Protip: According to the Ben & Jerry's blog, the "little 'not-so-secret' secret of Free Cone Day is that even though you can only order one cone at a time, you can always go through the line more than once."

As you wrap your mind around that, we'll offer a word to the wise: Prepare for long lines. Ben & Jerry's has even prepared a list of "Line Karma" with feel-good tips to pass the time like doing jumping jacks to burn off calories or using the time to call your parents.

Locally, you can visit participating shops in Plano and Highland Village, on the UT-Dallas campus or at DFW-International Airport.

Free grilled cheese

Oh, Norma's, you never let us down. The Oak Cliff original is known for generosity, regularly offering freebies like its classic Mile-High pie or 1960s pricing during its yearly birthday celebration. #NationalGrilledCheeseDay is no exception: On April 12, you can get a free classic grilled cheese sandwich (no purchase necessary; one per customer) at each of Norma's locations in Oak Cliff, Frisco and North Dallas from 10 a.m.-8 p.m. As we mentioned above, when free food is involved, it's a good idea to show up with a heaping helping of patience and time to spare.

In the mood for something meatier? This year's specialty sandwich includes in-house smoked chopped brisket, bacon, grilled jalapenos and onion, plus a mix of cheddar, Monterrey Jack and Swiss on Texas toast for $8.99.

Three Taco Tuesday deals

Getting pumped for the second annual Taco Libre festival on April 30? Last year's event proved wildly popular, and 20-plus purveyors of the Tex-Mex staple will be flanked with live music and luche libre matches when it takes over Main Street Garden

But, that's so far away. Start gearing up with a series of three deals at varying locations:

  • April 12 -- $2 tacos and half-price margaritas at Fort Worth's Revolver Taco Lounge from 6-8 p.m.
  • April 19 -- Free order of mole fries when you mention Taco Libre at Tacos Mariachi near Trinity Groves from noon-1 p.m.
  • April 26 -- 20 percent off your order when you mention Taco Libre at Like Highlands' Resident Taqueria from 5-7 p.m.
