Affluent intersection in Dallas is the 'it' spot for bakeries

How many sweets shops can one ritzy corner of Dallas sustain? SusieCakes, a California bakery, is moving to the intersection of Preston Road and Northwest Highway in Dallas. That makes four bakeries, all popular in their own right, at that same corner. Count 'em:

  1. Sprinkles, born in Beverly Hills, is an artisan cupcake shop that has become nationally known thanks in part to its owner Candace Nelson's appearance on Cupcake Wars on the Food Network. The 24-hour cupcake ATM outside the Dallas shop also helped make it massively popular. It has since sprouted a second shop nearby, Sprinkles Ice Cream, which sells shakes and other cold treats, many that come topped with a frosted cupcake.

  2. Carlo's Bakery, made popular by the TLC show Cake Boss. On opening weekend in Dallas, some people waited for more than eight hours for a sample of the shop's famous cannolis and lobster tails. The second week it was open, lines were still so long that employees had to put out metal gates to keep the crowds in line.

  3. Hospitality Sweet, a small bake shop that serves breakfast, lunch, beer, wine and sweets.

  4. SusieCakes, expected to open April 16.

We've already told you about several of those bakeries, so let's get churning on SusieCakes. Perhaps most notably, the new SusieCakes in Dallas will be the company's first Texas shop. In fact, it's the first SusieCakes out of its home state of California. Why Dallas?

"The genuinely friendly and hospitable nature of everyone I know from Dallas and everyone I met while looking at real estate led me to believe they would enjoy a business based on celebration," says founder and CEO Susan "Susie" Sarich via email.

SusieCakes will sell, yes, cakes, as well as whoopie pies, cookies, brownies, coffee cake, muffins and granola. Coffee comes from the D-FW born 'n bred company Cultivar.

The company is best known for its vanilla celebration cake, which comes iced with signature teal frosting. Cakes are often decorated into tiered treats or served as simple cupcakes.

Sarich says of her company philosophy, "If you can't spell it, we don't bake with it."
