Dallas restaurant dishes: Hey, did it look like this when you ordered it?

Have you ever wondered whether the food photos accompanying one of our restaurant reviews or dining galleries have gotten special styling treatment by a restaurant? After all, when our talented, skilled photographers here at The Dallas Morning News shoot the dishes, the restaurant knows a photographer is coming and can take special care with those plates. How do the dishes compare with the way they looked when, say, a critic tastes them on a review visit?

In the photos above, you can see a cabrito (baby goat) kebab from Rapscallion, the modern Texas restaurant on lower Greenville, first as gorgeously shot by Dallas Morning News staff photographer Ashley Landis, then as clunkily shot by yours truly. Hey, is there more cabrito in Ashley's version?

Now check out a dish from Uchi, the five-star modern Japanese place on Maple Avenue. It's a beet salad with yogurt, bitter greens and local honey. Easy to which one was shot by our pro, Rose Baca, though the chefs at Uchi styled both pretty gorgeously.

And finally, look at the pan-fried egg white and seafood on vegetables at Fortune House, the Shanghainese restaurant in Irving. The one on the left, shot by our freelancer Brandon Wade, got a pretty little carrot-and-parsley garnish mine didn't have.
