Taco Bell now delivers in Dallas -- and we tried it

You can now order a cheesy gordita crunch in Dallas and have it delivered to your doorstep. You can order nearly any item from the Taco Bell menu, in fact, without getting up from your chair.

Taco Bell announced Wednesday, July 8 it will use an "on-demand delivery service" called DoorDash to deliver food to 90 cities, Dallas included.

DoorDash is accessible via a mobile app or on its website.

"We believe delivery is the next step in catering to today's on-demand culture that's driving consumer behavior," Taco Bell CEO Brian Niccol said in a statement.

Taco Bell set up a dedicated website to link to the delivery platform. Delivery is also available in Los Angeles, San Francisco and Orange County, California.

Here's how it works:

  • DoorDash lets consumers pick the restaurant closest to their location, then gives a list of menu items available.
  • On Taco Bell's online menu, some items were marked higher than they are at local Taco Bells.
  • Customers can customize each item and write in special requests.
  • DoorDash charges tax and a delivery fee in addition to the price of the item(s). Tip is optional.

So we tested it out. My order for one burrito arrived in 18 minutes.

My receipt said the order was expected arrive in 45 minutes, so an 18-minute turnaround was impressive. The burrito arrived warm, with a variety of sauces in the bag and a handful of napkins.

The delivery charge will be a flat fee of $3.99 for Taco Bell deliveries in Dallas. Mine cost $1, and a spokesperson for DoorDash believes that might have been a special promotion; we're getting more info.

DoorDash deliveries take, on average, 38 minutes, says the company's Head of Communications Eitan Bencuya.

One thing to keep in mind is, you do pay for delivery and optional tip. My burrito order, with tax, delivery and a 15 percent tip, was $4.75. That's more than you might ordinarily spend on a burrito, but then again, it's being delivered right into your hands. The only thing I had to do was unwrap it.

The DoorDash driver said it was his first Taco Bell delivery in Dallas.
