Beloved Lakewood bakery, Romano's, strands couples without their wedding cakes

Update at 8:15 a.m. April 16: In a smart PR move, Celebrity Café & Bakery has stepped up and offered to help those unhappy couples caught cakeless thanks to Romano's outta-nowhere closure yesterday.

The bride and groom are still out some dough in the deal, but it's better than nothing: "Celebrity Café and Bakery wants to help these couples by honoring 50 percent (up to $250) of lost deposits from Romano's toward a wedding cake from Celebrity."

Original item April 15: This is Very Big News in the world of Bridal Cakery: Every-local-food-award-winning Romano's near White Rock Lake unexpectedly shut its doors this morning, leaving many couples cakeless days before their coupling. Our food folk found out the hard way: A Dallas Morning News editor stopped by the Mockingbird Lane bakery this morning to pick up a cake for a photo shoot. Alas, it was closed. No sign, no warning, no nothing. And no one's around to answer the phone or explain what the what.

Our media partners at KXAS-Channel 5 were out there for the sudden adios; so to our very own Daisy Avalos, who ran into an outta-luck bride-to-be and the (former, apparently) employee who called all the brides to warn them their weddings were about to get frosted.
