Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo

Daily rodeo action is, of course, a big part of this 120th annual show, but there's a whole lot more to it. Animal exhibits, a petting zoo, a 6-acre carnival midway with rides and games, fair foods, commercial exhibits, an art contest and vendors will quickly fill up your day. Then there are performances on the Coors Light Roadhouse and Stage: Jody Nix kicks off the list of entertainers on Jan. 15; other highlights this week include Charlie Robison on Jan. 19, Ray Wylie Hubbard on Jan. 20 and Zane Williams on Jan. 21. The All Western Parade is held Jan. 16 in downtown Fort Worth, with plenty of horses and no motorized vehicles. The tradition stretches back to 1896 (Comanche chief Quanah Parker was part of it in 1909). This year, the parade features the Fort Worth Herd drovers, stagecoaches, equestrian troupes and more.

Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration and Parade

Had the world been a kinder place, the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. would have turned 87 on Jan. 15. Instead, he'll be remembered in celebrations across the country that honor his brave work as a leader of the civil rights movement. In D-FW alone, there are more than a dozen such observances. The big news for this year's events is that the separate Fair Park and downtown Dallas parades of years past have merged and will offer entertainment, health screenings, a fashion show, kids' activities and more in Fair Park. The parade begins at 10 and runs along MLK Jr. Boulevard; the celebration follows the parade and runs till 5 p.m. The event is free.
