'12 Days of Christmas'

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me ... It doesn't matter if you can't remember how many partridges were in the pear tree or on which day the pipers were piping: It'll all be laid out for you in splendid detail at this second annual holiday display. The Dallas Arboretum gets the holiday season off to an early start with 12 elaborate Victorian gazebos, each 25 feet tall and containing a scene representing a day from the popular Christmas carol. This year, more than 500,000 lights will illuminate the gazebos and the arboretum's historic houses and tree canopies, making the exhibit extra special for viewing on the select nights the arboretum stays open late. The magic all kicks off with the lighting of the arboretum's 30-foot-tall Christmas tree in the middle of the garden Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.

'Tosca' silmulcast at Klyde Warren Park

For those without a background in music, a visit to the opera can be intimidating. For one thing, many operas are sung in languages other than English, and for another, their plots aren't always easy to follow. Introduce your family to the art form without the pressure of sitting in the theater as the Dallas Opera simulcasts its performance of Giacomo Puccini's Tosca at Klyde Warren Park. Take blankets and picnics -- or get your fill from the on-site restaurant and food trucks -- sit under the stars and watch the show, hosted by KLUV's Jody Dean and baritone Nathan Myers. Special activities include a pizza-dough toss, the Puccini's Pups drive for toys and treats for shelter pets, Tosca trivia and more. Best of all, it's free.
