Diwali Mela

One of the happiest -- and brightest -- holidays for Hindus in India or of Indian descent, Diwali Mela, or Festival of Light, dates back to ancient times and marks the victory of good over evil. The Dallas Fort Worth Indian Cultural Society's event is one of the largest Indian festivals in the southern United States; 60,000 people are expected to attend this year's 20th annual celebration.

Headlined by popular Bollywood "melody queen" Alka Yagnik, the fest features a kids' corner with zip lines, magic and juggling shows and a Halloween haunted house; cultural performances by community groups; vendor booths; a lamp-lighting ceremony; laser shows; a car raffle; and a fireworks show.

Harambee

Harambee means "let's pull together" in Swahili. The African- American cultural event that carries the name brings people together with hip-hop, gospel, jazz, spoken word, storytelling, African drumming and dance performances.

The fest's marketplace will have food, as well as quilts and African masks on display. The Arthello Beck Jr. Watoto Village will be the place to keep the little ones busy with games, painting and more.

Spooky Pooch Halloween Festival

This all-day, family-friendly event hosted by Million Dollar Dog Games and Downtown Dallas Inc. claims it will "scare the heck out of humans," and that sounds just about right for a canine-themed Halloween party.

The fest will feature dog agility demonstrations; contests for best dog costume, best dog and dog-owner costumes, and best dog and family costumes; entertainment; a kids' zone; vendors; and food and drink. Go to the festival website for a complete schedule of events and talent lineup.

Farmers Market Daytime Street and Treat

Want to take your kids trick-or-treating during daylight hours so that you don't throw off their usual bedtime routine?

Take a bucket for candy and do some trick-or-treating at the Grand Prairie Farmers Market.

Pro tip: With trick-0r-treating in the bag, you can hire a babysitter so the adults can have a grown-up Halloween celebration at night.
