Addison Oktoberfest

Break out your lederhosen and dirndls. Addison Oktoberfest kicks off Thursday for plenty of German-themed fun. In addition to all the beer you want to consume, the festival has concerts and dancers, a German spelling bee, a yodeling competition, a 5K and fun run, and a Dach-Sunday parade and race for feisty little four-leggers.

Also happening: arts and crafts, carnival rides and games and a family fun zone, along with a host of specialty food vendors (I can already smell the sauerkraut). As for the good stuff, grab a cold beer at the outdoor beer garden or from the Schloss Addison tent. Pro tip: Head over on Sunday and save yourself the $10 admission fee.

GrapeFest

You can't build a town and name it Grapevine without celebrating the almighty grape (or at least you shouldn't). Thankfully, the 29th annual GrapeFest, which encompasses all of downtown Grapevine, features four days of family-friendly festival fun.

First, let's talk about wine: Visitors can sample a variety of Texas, Oregon and Argentina wines with tastings each day, enjoy a glass of bubbly in Liberty Park or take a tour of Grapevine's urban wine trail. Other events include a carnival and midway, marketplace and, of course, shopping at downtown businesses.

Dallas Pride

Now in its 32nd year, the Dallas gay pride festival has moved to bigger digs at Reverchon Park. The festival includes the Alan Ross Texas Freedom Parade, a celebration of equality that features a sea of rainbow flags, decorated parade floats and colorful beads tossed to the crowd Mardi Gras-style.

The festival itself features 125 vendors selling trinkets, clothing and jewelry as well as pet-rescue adoptions and booths manned by LGBT organizations and community groups. DJs and local bands will perform all afternoon, leading up to the headlining performance by country singer Ty Herndon, who came out publicly in a People magazine article last year. A Family Pride Zone is designed with LGBT parents and their kids in mind and will include face painting, a bounce house, McGruff the Crime Dog and more.

American Indian Pow Wow

Several hundred American Indians from dozens of tribes will take part in this 53rd annual cultural celebration at Traders Village, which will feature tribal dance contests, a tepee village exhibit, arts and crafts vendors, honoring ceremonies and singing.

In the dance competitions, held all three days of the event, dancers from 2 to 80 years old will perform precise routines in full regalia of feathers, buckskin, bells and beads. Don't miss out on the Indian food booth, which will serve foods such as fry bread and corn soup.

Plano Balloon Festival

While the centerpiece of this spectacular three-day event is the flight of 45 hot-air balloons high in the September sky, there is much more to it: kids' activities and rides, sky divers, tethered balloon rides, concerts from local bands, performances from dance troupes and martial arts teams, food and even fireworks.

Balloon launches happen each evening at 6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday at 7 a.m. Specially shaped balloons this year include Pigasus the flying pig, High Kitty, Yellow Bird, Puddy Cat and High Jack.
