Dog-a-Poolooza

Dog splash season kicks of in earnest this weekend (seriously, there are at least three events this weekend alone, and we rounded up 13 that you shouldn't miss). Garland Pawsibilities hosts the 10th annual Dog-A-Poolooza, a festival of fun and dog-related services. Dogs can take a dip in the large pool or in the wading pools. Small dogs (less than 30 pounds) can frolic in a fenced area.

The festivities include a number of on-site services including dog washing and nail trimming, low-cost vaccinations and microchipping. Wondering what your pooch is thinking? Pet psychic Sandra Larson will be available for pet readings at $20 for 15 minutes. Attendees can also visit with rescue groups and pet supply vendors. Dogs must have tags or proof of current rabies vaccination. Proceeds support Garland Pawsibilities and its ongoing programs, the Pet Adoption Center and Garland shelter animals.

Highland Village Balloon Festival

Balloons in striking colors will brighten the sky at the 28th annual Highland Village Balloon Festival sponsored by the Lions Club. Mass ascensions featuring balloons up to 100 feet tall will take place in the early mornings and early evenings, with balloonists battling the wind to keep their vessels on their intended paths. There'll be a balloon glow, with pilots lighting their burners against the night sky, Friday and Saturday at 8:30 p.m.

Want to take a ride? Tethered balloon rides will be available for a price. A Kids Zone, which also requires an additional fee, will feature a collection of bounce houses, train rides and a climbing wall. Musical performances, food, arts and crafts, vision screenings and other festival fun are also on the agenda. Proceeds benefit the Lions Club's efforts to support local hearing and vision screenings.

Chalk Art Festival

Colorful street art will rule the day at this free, new festival in Fort Worth's West 7th shopping and entertainment development. Professional and amateur artists will spend hours in the blazing sun completing visual masterpieces using only chalk and their own creativity. Amateur works will be judged, with an awards ceremony set to take place at 7:30p.m.

Adding to the day's fun: a children's coloring area and live music by DJ Jason Esquire. Food and beverages will be available for purchase at any of the dozen West 7th dining establishments. A portion of proceeds benefits the Art Station, a nonprofit organization offering art therapy and other community programs.

Want more chalky goodness? There's another chalk festival in Plano on Saturday.

Them Classics Car Show

Craft beer and custom cars - what more do you need for an awesome Saturday? Dallas car club Them, the group behind the popular Invasion car shows in Deep Ellum, will bring a display of hot rods and custom automobiles to the patio of Texas Ale Project as part of a daylong event at the brewery. Check out the car show beginning at 1 p.m., then go on one of the free tours of the brewery offered at 2 and 3 p.m.

After the car show ends at 5 p.m., head over to the shaded beer garden for a set from the banjo-driven bluegrass band Walker & the Texas Dangers. Food from Smokin Joe's hot dogs will be available for purchase until 9 p.m. The TAP Beer Garden offers an assortment of family-friendly games including a beanbag toss, pingpong, giant Jenga and bubbles, and the air-conditioned tap room has plenty of board games to play. Keep the Spirit of '45 Alive

Grab your coveralls and red bandana and take a trip to the Frontiers of Flight Museum as it celebrates the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. With the theme Keep the Spirit of '45 Alive, the two-day event is part of a national grass-roots campaign to preserve the legacy of the Greatest Generation and honor its example of courage, shared sacrifice and can-do attitude. Speaking of that can-do attitude, Rosie the Riveter is one of the most enduring images of WWII, and as such will be celebrated in a big way during this event. On Saturday at 10:30 a.m., the museum will attempt a Guinness World Record for having the most dressed-up Rosie lookalikes assembled in one location.

The gathering is part of Rosies Rally 'Round the Troops, a national project paying tribute to the work American women did stateside to help win the war. Other activities taking place during the celebration include static-line parachute demonstrations by the Liberty Jump Team, sessions with "living history" actors, patriotic and period music performed by Norma Valles, numerous kids' activities and more.
