Local Brews, Local Grooves

To say the craft-beer scene in Dallas is exploding is an understatement: Just five years ago, there were two craft breweries in Dallas-Fort Worth. Now, there are more than 30. About 20 of those will be offering samples at the House of Blues' second annual Local Brews, Local Grooves event, where at least 14 musicalacts are scheduled to perform.

Brewhouses represented at the event include Audacity, Bishop Cider Co., Four Corners, Peticolas, Rabbit Hole, Deep Ellum and Revolver; musicians include the Demigs, Buffalo Ruckus, Karyna Micaela, the O's, the Wicks and Crystal Yates.

EGL Dallas 10K

When one sees the term 10K, one usually thinks of a footrace. Well, this is a marathon, but not of the typical variety. Epic Gaming League is an eSports organization that brings gamers together to compete as well as socialize. This year's EGL Dallas 10K offers three days of game play.

On this year's tournament schedule: Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (for Xbox One), Mortal Kombat X (Xbox One), Ultra Street Fighter IV (Xbox 360) and Super Smash Bros. (Wii U). Each game offers a $10,000 prize pool. Also on the agenda: vendor displays, a cosplay contest (Saturday at 4 p.m.) and a VIP after-party.

Social Science: Time

The Perot Museum of Nature and Science's 21-and-up, after-hours Social Science events are always a lot of fun. So much so that they're frequently sold out well in advance. Well, at the time of this posting, there were still some spaces left for this Friday's edition (if that's changed, apologies, maybe you can sign up for the next one). Participants are encouraged to dress for their favorite decade.

Sip a cocktail, make a potato clock, have your future read by a psychic, virtually age yourself  with April Face Aging Software and take part in other time-themed activities.

Want more Perot Museum fun? The Discovery Days program is on Saturday.

Modern Kids - Summer Flicks

When it comes to things to do in August with the family, you can't beat free and indoors. A French kitty with a double life in A Cat in Paris is among the many characters you can catch on-screen during this three-day event.

It also features short films selected by the New York International Children's Film Festival, billed as the biggest of its kind in North America. Film festival selections will be screened Tuesday and Aug. 12 at 10:30 a.m. and 1 p.m., and A Cat in Paris will be shown Aug. 13 at 1 p.m. Another cool touch: It's at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and gallery admission will also be free for film fest attendees.

Get yourself a deal

Here's the thing, it's August, and some weeks there just aren't that many big festivals. So we're going to round up some of the summertime deals that may be of interest. You can get half-price admission at the Dallas Zoo through Aug. 31. See the "Giants of the Jurassic" exhibition of animatronic dinosaurs (be warned, there's one that enjoys "spitting" water on visitors), elephants in the Giants of the Savanna area, the snakes in the herpetarium and various creatures in the DinoSoar wildlife show.

There's also free admission at the Trinity River Audubon Center through Aug. 30. And Dollar Days at the Dallas Arboretum runs through Aug. 31 and features general garden admission is $1 and admission to the Rory Meyers Children's Adventure Garden is $2, as well as some tasty treats for $1 to $2.
