Best Southwest Juneteenth Celebration

Juneteenth commemorates June 19, 1865, the day slaves in Texas learned that Abraham Lincoln had signed the Emancipation Proclamation more than two years earlier.

The Best Southwest cities have banded together to present this festival with the theme Celebrating Freedom Through Diversity. The family event features food vendors, local artists, crafts in the Kids on the Hill Creative Arts Zone, musical performances and much more.

Highlights are performances by the Grammy-winning Dazz Band and local band Memphis Soul. Big Al Mack from "Kiss FM" KHKS-FM (106.1) is the master of ceremonies.

Dallas Arts District Summer Block Party

Spend Friday evening in the Dallas Arts District with special activities that run all the way till midnight. On the schedule at the Dallas Museum of Art, Crow Collection of Asian Art and Nasher Sculpture Center: music in the galleries, movies, outdoor concerts and guided tours.

The street party will feature food trucks, local bands, activity tables and social media scavenger hunts. Aside from food and drink, everything is free, so you can afford to take the whole family.

Some highlights at the museums: The Crow Collection will screen a documentary on the Dalai Lama, who will be visiting in July, as well as offer meditation sessions; the DMA will show Batman (the 1989 version with Michael Keaton as the caped crusader) at 9 p.m. and The Avengers (2012) at 9:30; and the Nasher will present local singer- songwriter group the Walden Twins at 6p.m., Austin-based rock band Quiet Company at 7 and the film A Fish Called Wanda at 9.

Best Little Brewfest in Texas

This festival in Old Town Lewisville features Texas beers, including ones from Lewisville's Cobra Brewing Co., plus food trucks, vendors and live music.

There'll be a car show from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.; an After Party in the Park will run from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A dozen 2-ounce samples from more than 80 brewers, plus winemakers and distillers, are included in the admission fee. Additional tasting cards are $5.

The event takes place outside and in tents (some air-conditioned) set up near the Medical Center of Lewisville Grand Theater and Lewisville City Hall.

Texas Black Invitational Rodeo

Black cowboys have worked Texas ranches since the early 1800s, and weekend rodeos featuring black riders have been around since the 1940s, according to the Texas State Historical Association. The tradition is a great piece of Texas history.

The Texas Black Invitational Rodeo is marking its 27th year with more than 300 cowboys and cowgirls competing for significant cash prizes. Presented by the African American Museum, the rodeo will feature categories including steer wrestling, wild bull riding, barrel racing and a Pony Express relay race.

There's also a Friday Rodeo Hoedown event at the African American Museum.

Fair Park 5K Urban Dash

This fourth annual 5K race is no walk in the park. The run will take you all around Fair Park - up, over and under 13 obstacles that will have you dumpster diving, leapfrogging, even jumping out the window of a plane! Warning: There is no mud, but you will get wet.

The course is suited to both experienced runners and newcomers of all ages. If you're not up for the course, watching the race is free. The best viewing areas for spectators will be near the start and finish lines at the intersection of Grand and First avenues.
