12 what-were-they-thinking fashion trends from the past 60 years

We've all made some less-than-stellar fashion choices. (Neon leotards? Really??) But the first step to recovery is admitting there's a problem, so consider this our collective confession for the worst fashion crimes our country has committed since 1950.

What does victory look like? Apparently, a horrendous 1950s hairstyle. The sheer amount of hairspray needed to keep this look intact should have been enough to deter women from donning it, but it seems they were determined to defy gravity with this bizarre retro look. Where there's a will, there's a way.

The bullet bra has to be the most unflattering trend of the 20th century. Designed to look like women are hiding two traffic cones underneath their sweaters, it's a wonder that the bullet bra made it to production without a single person saying "Hmm, maybe we shouldn't make a bra that's neither comfortable nor functional." Glad we left this trend in the past and moved on to rounder shapes.

'60s trends

Psychedelic prints

Psychedelic prints were rampant in the '60s, which made the decade look like some awful real-life version of a Dr. Seuss book. With a whole generation of people waltzing around in clothes made of rainbow-colored swirls, they were a literal headache.

We're not sure if this trend started because someone accidentally missed their lash line or because she was in a hurry, but we're hoping it wasn't on purpose. Though the base of the eye flick is just a thick, winged liner (which remains a popular eyeliner style today), the upper line drawn along the brow crease makes the look anything but timeless.

Elephant pants

Not to be confused with the elephant pants gaining popularity in 2016, these '70s-style bottoms were frequently made of denim and did nothing to help the gentle giant they were named after. Extremely flared and horribly fit, elephant pants answer the question: What would it look like if I had yards of excess fabric flopping around my legs?

The only people who should still wear these grossly oversized specs are old men and hipsters, which means the trend is kept alive by people who are too eccentric to adapt to today's fashion or too old to care. We don't know how these frames became popular in the first place, but we hope they won't linger for much longer.

Permed hair

Prom photos from the '80s should go down in history as the greatest (and most embarrassing) of all time. Between the blown-out perm and the balloon-sized puffy sleeves, it's remarkable that the ladies didn't block their dates out of the pictures altogether.

Neon leotards

The decade that brought the world "jazzercise" also made an unfortunate contribution to workout attire: the neon leotard. The worst part about this trend? It was worn with equally-awful, obscenely-bright leggings and leg warmers. We're crossing our fingers that this style doesn't make a comeback anytime soon.

Chokers

These tattoo-like necklaces cost next to nothing in the '90s, which means every girl with a piggy bank had one. The already ugly trend was made infinitely worse when charms were added, like this yin yang one. Kylie and Kendall Jenner are reviving the trend in 2016, though their ribbon versions are a more sophisticated take.

Whoever created butterfly clips should be sentenced to a lifetime of wearing them as punishment for bringing this trend into the world. We can't think of a single occasion in which these colorful hair clips actually looked good, and we shamefully regret ever wearing them.

We don't care how big of a fan you are, you should never distract the 'Boys by wearing this awful outfit to a game. For that matter, don't even wear it to a tailgate. Don't wear it at all.(Juan Garcia)

Though this trend originated in the '90s, it hit its peak in the early 2000s. Justin Timberlake and Britney Spears infamously fell victim to the craze on the red carpet (and are still trying to live it down 15 years later) but many more were seized by the desire to dress entirely in denim, presumably because they figured, "Hey -- denim looks good ... with more denim, right?" Wrong. They were very, very wrong.

"On fleek"? Forget it. The turn of the century was all about wafer-thin eyebrows. Though Kate Moss made wispy blonde brows look chic, they were far from cute on the average person. This was not a great time for eyebrow care; over-plucked and practically invisible, it required surgery-like precision with tweezers to maintain the look. Of course, there's a very good chance we'll be looking back with regret on today's thick-and-filled-in brow trend after another 15 years.
