Popular pilates gym expands to the Park Cities area of Dallas

Session Pilates is opening a new studio near Lovers Lane and the Dallas North Tollway, nestled next to Chip's Old Fashioned Hamburgers in University Park.

It will be Dallas' third Session Pilates, behind the original on Fitzhugh Avenue, near Uptown; and a second on Mockingbird Lane, near Lakewood. This new Session isn't open yet; founder Brittany Grignon and her crew chose to announce the Lovers Lane location on a lovely date, Feb. 14.

The expansion of Session Pilates mirrors the increase in popularity of Pilates gyms in general in Dallas-Fort Worth. The workout is a combination of strengthening, toning and flexibility exercises, sometimes done on a special machine called a reformer. (At Session, they use the Allegro 2.) The workout is named for German man Joseph Pilates, a circus performer, gymnast and boxer who designed a technique to strengthen the core, correct posture and work muscles in the legs, arms and back.

Though the workout is anaerobic, the 50-minute classes are not easy. Small, isometric movements work specific muscle groups — ones that'll feel sore the day after a class.

Pilates, like barre classes, have become popular among exercisers in Dallas who use ClassPass, a way to test out gyms around town on a one-off basis. Grignon teaches some of the classes herself; she has a background in indoor cycling and yoga. A fleet of instructors covers the rest of the classes, which take place seven days a week, holidays included.

Consider Session Pilates a boutique gym, with prices to match: One class costs $30, but prices go down to $18.75 per class when bought in bundles.

The brand has grown fairly quickly in Dallas. Grignon notes that the new Lovers Lane studio — which is expected to open in April 2019 — marks "the third in three years."
