February 2 is the day for animals.
In the morning, famous groundhog Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow in Pennsylvania, which means six more weeks of winter. By midday, PT the orangutan was making her Super Bowl pick.
The 43-year-old primate at the Fort Worth Zoo made the prediction by choosing between two football-shaped piñatas. Was she favoring the Atlanta Falcons or the New England Patriots? Watch the video to find out:
Animals at the Fort Worth Zoo have been making Super Bowl picks since 1998. Rasha the elephant started the tradition, and other animals have been taking turns in recent years.
While North Texans are entertained watching animals make their predictions, the ceremony is actually an enrichment technique for primates like PT.
"It allows them to play with these novel objects and explore the objects, and display some behaviors like forging and scavenging for food," said Avery Elander of the Fort Worth Zoo.
In the last eight years, the Fort Worth Zoo residents have picked five outcomes correctly. However, Boudreaux the bear incorrectly picked the Carolina Panthers to win it all last year.
