Beer buzz: Community's new Silly Gose is a tangy summer sipper

The brewery tinkers with tradition by adding tangerine peel and apricot puree to the recipe for this light-bodied beer.

Silly Gose

BREWERY: Community Beer Co., Dallas

STYLE: Gose; a sour, unfiltered beer brewed with at least 50 percent malted wheat, a touch of coriander and salt. Gose beers generally have low hop bitterness and an alcohol content of 4 percent to 5 percent ABV. The style is believed to have originated in the German town of Goslar in the early 16th century, but it is associated with the city of Leipzig, where it became so popular that gose taverns (Gosenschenken) were common in the late 19th century. Gose beers are enjoying a mini-revival among American craft brewers.

THE PITCH: The brewery tinkers with tradition by adding tangerine peel and apricot puree to the recipe for this light-bodied beer. The twist lends a fruity complement to the tart and salty notes, making for a tasty summer sipper. The beer pours a frothy but fleeting head that holds aromas of citrus and coriander. It has a refreshing tangy flavor accented with tropical fruit notes. Although low in bitterness, the beer has a refreshing sour citrus finish with a touch of salinity. With just 5 percent alcohol, this thirst quencher is a good choice for patio or poolside parties.
