Beer buzz: Rahr throws party for launch of hoppy new IPA

This American style IPA is a departure for Rahr, which made its name in German-style beers.

Dadgum IPA

BREWERY: Rahr & Sons Brewing Company, Fort Worth

STYLE: American IPA; made with American hops, this style of India Pale Ale tends to be very hop-forward, with pronounced bitterness.

THE PITCH: Inspired by West Coast-style IPAs, Rahr uses a big dose of Citra and Lemondrop hops to make this beer — in kettle additions as well as dry hopping. Citrus and pine dominate the aroma and on the palate. The grapefruit peel and piney bitterness packs a good, hoppy punch, but thanks to a judicious use of malts, the bitterness doesn't overwhelm the tastebuds, in contrast with many West Coast IPAs. Hints of tropical fruit and bready malts lend complexity and fullness midpalate, but the finish is dry.

SERVE IT: Easy to sip on its own but is also a very food-friendly beer. Pair it with spicy foods (like fiery Indian, Thai or Mexican dishes) or an aged gouda, such as Trader Joe's 1000-Day Gouda.

GET SOME: Sold year-round in six-packs of 12-ounce cans for $8 to $10; widely available at liquor stores and supermarkets that sell craft beer.
